How much does a good website cost, and what makes it truly valuable?

A website's price doesn't depend on looks — but on planning, speed, SEO and long-term business results.

How much does a good website cost, and what makes it truly valuable?

For most business owners, the first question in a website project is: 'How much does it cost?' That's understandable — but it's exactly this question that leads to the most disappointment. Because a website's price can't be calculated from a well-defined price list, like a car. The price depends on what you do with it.

Why can't an exact price be quoted up front?

A website isn't a product, it's a tool. Between two seemingly similar websites — say, the brochure sites of two law firms — there can be a sixfold price difference, and both can be worth their money. Because one is essentially an online business card, while the other actively wins clients from Google search.

The real driver of the price isn't how many pages get built, but what the website has to be able to do: who it has to speak to, what business result it has to deliver, and how mature it has to be.

What's all included in a website's price?

Typically only 30–40% of a professionally built website's price goes to design. The larger part is strategic planning, development, speed optimisation, building in SEO foundations, content editing and testing. And then there's the post-launch period: continuous optimisation and maintenance.

If someone only sells you the design, the price will be lower — but then extra costs come for everything that makes the website not just pretty but effective too. The 'everything included' approach is usually cheaper in the long run.

Bands: indicative price ranges

A small start-up's brochure site (1–5 pages, basic features) is typically HUF 300k–1.2 million. A more serious business website (deep content, blog, multilingual, booking system, CRM integration) is HUF 1.5–4 million. A custom webshop or web application starts at HUF 4–6 million, and for complex projects can exceed HUF 20 million.

These aren't quotes, just guidelines. The exact price always emerges after a needs assessment — and a serious partner won't tell you over the phone without one.

What makes a website genuinely valuable in the long run?

A good website eventually brings in more than it cost. Four things decide this: whether the user journey is well designed (it takes the visitor where you want), whether it's fast (Google prefers it, and so do buyers), whether it works well on mobile (60–70% of traffic comes from there), and whether there's continuous optimisation behind it.

A HUF 1 million website that brings 5 new enquiries a month pays off quickly. A HUF 300k website that nobody finds never will. Price is only interesting when you look at it relative to value.

What's worth avoiding before you decide?

Don't just compare prices — ask exactly what you get. Ask what the quote doesn't include (hosting, domain, images, copy, maintenance). Ask for references: what websites they've built, and how those perform live.

And most importantly: don't choose a partner who talks immediately about the end result (what the site will be able to do) before they've asked what you want to achieve with it. It's a good sign if the first meeting is 80% about your business.
