Website or web application: which does your business need?

Brochure site, business website, webshop, web application — each serves a different goal. With practical examples, we help you decide which you need.

Website or web application: which does your business need?

Very different things get filed under the word 'website'. The difference between a brochure site and a complex web application is like that between a bicycle and an electric train — yet many people ask an agency for the same thing. That's why it's worth clarifying the terms before you start.

Brochure website — for whom and why?

An online business card. 1–5 pages, generally static content (about us, services, contact). Its purpose is that if someone searches for your business, they find you and see that you exist.

Typical user: a sole trader, a small consultancy, a local service provider. Someone who already has most of their customers and just needs to be visible in the market.

Business website with features — a step ahead

Here we're at 5–20 pages, a blog, multiple languages, a booking system, newsletter sign-up, CRM integration. The website actively works on winning customers — qualifying leads, booking the first consultation.

Typical user: a mid-sized company, a professional service provider (doctor, lawyer, beautician, restaurant), an industry where Google search is a serious source.

Webshop — when online sales is the goal

Product catalogue, cart, payment, shipping, inventory management, customer accounts. It can be template-based (Shopify, WooCommerce), or custom. The choice depends on the business model — e.g. complex pricing, B2B, ERP integration often stretch the capabilities of template solutions.

Typical user: anyone who wants to profit from online orders rather than physical sales. A webshop is always a living system — it needs attention on a monthly basis.

Web application — when the process is the product

Here you no longer just display information, but code a given workflow. Example: a booking system, an internal project-management tool, an online course platform, a customer portal. User accounts, access control, data handling are all part of it.

Typical user: a business whose competitive advantage lies in its own process — and wants to manage that in a tailored system. Typically HUF 5–25 million launch cost.

How to decide what you actually need?

Ask yourself this question: what is the website for? If the answer is 'so we exist' — a brochure site is enough. If 'we want to win new customers with it' — a business website. If 'we want to sell online' — a webshop. If 'we want to digitise an internal process' — a web application.

The most common mistake: building something that overshoots the need (and is a needless cost), or that falls short of the need (and has to be redone). A good planning conversation clarifies this in 1 hour.
